Bubba To The Rescue is the second book in Jennifer Walker's Green Meadow Series, which kicked off with Bubba Goes National, the story of a teenager named Leslie and her horse, Lucky. (Bubba is the goofy nickname that Leslie's father gives Lucky.) Here, in the time-honored way of books like Black Beauty and The Black Stallion and Satan, a barn fire sets in motion a sequence of events from which the affected horse people must grapple.
For Leslie, the aftermath comes in the shape of a beautiful horse she calls Spark, a rescue from the fire who seems to need her in a different, but similarly important, way that Lucky does. It's her job to sort out what each horse requires and can offer, something that's not always easy.

There are the tensions that come with young adult life, as well--calling a beloved stepmother "mom," and Leslie's nemesis, Kate, who's always ready to bring Leslie down. Also, Leslie has a boyfriend, Alex, who is pretty much the perfect guy since he rides: "Leslie handed her curry and brush to her boyfriend," Walker writes, "gave him a quick kiss and walked out to the dressing room." Then it's off to the horse show. Who doesn't want a boyfriend like Alex?
Or, for that matter, a horse like Lucky.

This book has it all: girls and their horses and enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat ... plus the author brings in life events such as a stepmother and a teen boyfriend who actually rides! You gotta love guys like this. They were nowhere to be found when I grew up riding horses, but I'm mightily relieved to hear they're hanging out with today's generation of horse-crazy girls.
