A Visit to Chincoteague

By Kitson

This morning I packed up my ancient copy of Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague (nostalgic beach read), loaded the children in the car and headed east over the Bay Bridge and beyond. On the other side of the bridge, miles of golden-tasseled Maryland corn fields eventually yielded to Virginia's hazy green and blue marshes.

After the final low bridge over Chincoteague Bay, we landed on the famed island -- home to Misty herself. Tomorrow, after the beach, we'll go on pony search on foot through the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Later we'll cross another bridge onto Assasteague island to search for ponies and admire other wildlife on a boat tour around the Assateague National Seashore.

So far, however, the only ponies we've seen with our own eyes since we've been here have been the ones in a pen behind the local McDonald's. Even they were a thrilling site, and we've only been here eight hours!
Definitely going to check this out on Friday.
