For the Love of Irish Horses

By Kitson

Silver Galtee, an imported 1996 Irish Draught Sport Horse who competes in dressage, eventing, and hunter/jumpers.

With Saint Patrick’s Day just a week, away, I thought it was time to share a little Irish green on TheSweetFeed.com. So in honor of the Emerald Isle, leprechauns, four-leaf clover and a country that gives horses the right of way on the road, we’ll feature a beautiful Irish horse or two or three this week.

First up, the glorious and multi-talented 16.3 hh stallion Silver Galtee. Owner Jennifer Sears-Vanderwerken of Greyhaven Sport Horses in Vernon Center, New York bought him as a foal in Ireland. She didn’t plan to buy a foal on that trip, but she could not resist the youngster’s magic after they met. Jennifer, a third-generation horse trainer, told me that his personality is jovial and affectionate, much like a Labrador retriever.

“I have ridden and trained nearly all breeds and disciplines,” says Jennifer. “I find the Irish horses to be very happy expressive animals that possess a very competitive nature. No matter the job given they will get it done with a smile." Click here to watch Silver Galtee in action, it is sure to make you smile.

Who's your favorite Irish horse or pony? Please share!
